People are always looking for ways to be healthier. From various diets to visiting health gurus to buying the next best exercise equipment, there isn’t a shortage of traditional things to try to live a healthier lifestyle.

But what about creating a backyard oasis? In addition to being a positive source of health and wellbeing, it can also increase your property value and create a compelling selling point for future buyers.

Before we give you tips for creating your backyard oasis, let’s explore these health benefits and a few others in more detail.

Get Outdoors More and Inspire Physical Activity

Two of the most notable health benefits of creating a backyard oasis are getting outdoors more and inspiring physical activity. Spending time outdoors can keep you physically fit, focused, less stressed, and can boost your mood.

Spending time outdoors is so beneficial that doctors now prescribe outdoor activities to treat mental health challenges like anxiety and depression and inspire better physical health. It’s called nature therapy. The practice involves immersing yourself in nature and outdoor activities to promote healing and growth.

With information like this, creating a backyard oasis should be on everyone’s to-do list to ensure they spend quality time outside. You can also designate a spot in your backyard oasis for exercise, whether it’s practicing yoga, stretching, doing low-impact exercises, or weight training.

Contribute to a Healthy Planet

Most people think about the personal health benefits they can reap from a backyard oasis. But creating one can also contribute to a healthier planet.

For example, when you plant trees, you help create cleaner air. Installing a greenhouse will help you grow plants. Using sustainable yard and plant treatments with fewer chemicals keeps them healthier. And your oasis can double as a wildlife habit that attracts birds, squirrels, rabbits, and other wildlife.

Connect With Family and Friends

One of the best things you can do for your mental health is be around people who love and uplift you. Socializing, in general, can help increase your happiness. It can also improve your cognitive abilities as you engage with others and better your self-esteem.

Creating a backyard oasis can inspire you to invite family and friends over more often to socialize and keep your connections alive and thriving.

Express Your Creativity

One of the most enjoyable things about having a backyard oasis is getting to express your creativity while designing it. Expressing your creativity is not just enjoyable. It’s good for your mental health too.

Creative and artistic activities can help reduce stress, boost mood, and relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression. They also have a calming effect and can help you become more in tune with who you are.

Express your creativity as you design and add to your oasis over time for a mental health boost whenever needed.

Tips for Creating a Backyard Oasis

Ready to create your own backyard oasis? These four tips can get you started.

Plan out your vision

Planning is the first, and maybe the most important step in creating your eco-friendly backyard oasis. A well-thought-out plan ensures your vision comes to life rather than stays in your head. Visualize your luxurious backyard oasis first.

Answering the following questions can help you figure out precisely what you want your backyard oasis to look like and allow you to do:

  • What kind of plants will your garden have?
  • Do you want to build a greenhouse?
  • Will there be an area for yoga and mindfulness activities?
  • What colors do you want to use?
  • What space do you have to work with?
  • What kind of lighting will there be?
  • What’s your ideal layout and landscaping?
  • Will you create an outdoor cooking area?
  • What kind of trees will you add?

Then, start listing the steps it will take to get to the above vision. Determine which parts you’ll work on and when, the materials, supplies, and tools you’ll need, and what you want to accomplish each month.

Also, be sure you prioritize privacy in your design.

Prioritize privacy

A backyard oasis isn’t really an oasis without privacy. You need a decent level of privacy to truly feel relaxed, comfortable, and safe in your outdoor space.

So, think about how you can ensure privacy most stylishly. High fences, tall plants, privacy screens, tall planters, and hedges are great options for providing privacy in your backyard oasis.

Our next tip is to figure out who can help you bring your vision to life.

Determine who can help you

A backyard oasis is a big project to take on by yourself. The last thing you want to do is get overwhelmed with all there is to do and decide not to see your vision all the way through. Instead, see who can help you.

Whether it’s one part or the entire backyard oasis project, reach out to friends and family that might be able to help you. Make friends with associates at gardening stores. And leverage social media to connect with others creating a backyard oasis.

Make a list of a few self-education resources too. Google and Youtube can help you out when your team isn’t available.

Having people to lean on as you create your backyard oasis will make the experience much more manageable and enjoyable.

Create at your pace

It would be great if you could develop your backyard oasis in a day, but realistically, it’ll take some time to come together. You don’t have to put a deadline on your backyard oasis. Instead, create at a pace you’re comfortable with and make it an ongoing project.

If the small things need to come first and the significant parts of the project next year, that’s okay. If you want to complete your backyard oasis in a year, do that. If you want to slowly add things over several years, go that route.

Enjoy the process instead of rushing to the final product.

From getting outdoors more to inspiring physical activity or helping you express your creativity, a backyard oasis is exactly what you need to boost your mental, physical, and emotional wellness, as well as raise your property value and provide a strong selling point for future buyers.
