How to Make Your Backyard the Place to Be After Dark

For some people, the backyard at night feels like enemy territory, it’s too dark, too cold, too many bugs buzzing around. Even if a beautiful green oasis is good for your health and soul, shouldn’t it technically be like that all day, every day? Well, here’s the thing: the backyard doesn’t have to be scary or uncomfortable after sunset. Honestly, unless you live on a farm (or rural area) that’s swarming with coyotes and other wild animals, you really shouldn’t be threatened by being in your own backyard.

Actually, all it takes is the right setup, really, that’s it. This alone can help it become your favorite place to relax, unwind, or even entertain. No, really, it’s definitely possible, so, just imagine a warm, glowing space that feels like an outdoor oasis, no matter the season. Yes, it’s possible, and no, it doesn’t take a miracle.

Brighten Up the Night

Well, for starters, dark backyards are great for stargazing, but not much else, right? Actually, just a little lighting can completely change that. It doesn’t even cost much, but adding landscape lighting can instantly make your yard feel more welcoming. Besides, just think of it this way; it’s not just about seeing where you’re going, it’s about creating a vibe.

What a lot of homeowners do is make highlights in their backyard. For example, highlighting the walkway, lighting for the seating area, maybe showing a tree or two, it’s just small things like that. Some people will even put string lights around their outdoor dining area since a lot of bistros do that. So even that could be a pretty nice option.

Chase Away the Chill

For the most part, cool evenings have a way of sending people indoors, but the right setup can keep you cozy outside. For example, a fire pit is a classic option that brings warmth and ambiance and gives you the perfect excuse to roast some marshmallows.

Basically, you just can’t go wrong with an option like that anyway. Plus, if a fire pit feels like too much effort, patio heaters or portable fireplaces are simple, no-fuss alternatives. But even something a little more simple like outdoor blankets can work too.

Block the Breeze

For the most part, a little wind can ruin the best backyard plans, especially if your space is open and exposed. But you can easily block it, especially for your sitting area. For example, tall hedges or trellises with climbing plants can act as natural windbreakers and add a touch of greenery while they’re at it.

However, if planting isn’t in the cards, outdoor screens or curtains can work wonders too. They shield your seating area, making it feel like a cozy little corner rather than an outdoor wind tunnel. But once you’ve got the wind under control, your backyard will instantly feel more comfortable.

Bug Off, Insects

Yes, by all means, they’re the worst. Seriously, nothing kills the vibe faster than mosquitos or moths deciding your face is the place to be. But bugs don’t have to dominate your evenings. Actually, citronella candles are a classic for a reason, they work and add a nice glow to your setup. But there are some discreet devices you could look into as well.
