Business Travel: How To Prepare

Whether your company has requested that you go on a business trip or you are a digital nomad ready to work from some major European hub, understanding how to best prepare yourself for business travel is essential.

Travelling for business is different than going on a vacation, and you’ll need to understand key aspects before setting off. By preparing in advance, you can feel more confident, rested, and at ease when working and traveling to a new destination.

In this guide, we’ll cover what you need to know before your next trip. Let’s dive in!

Learn More About The Local Cultural Etiquette

One of the most important aspects to focus on is knowing the basics of local cultural etiquette. This can change, especially in the business landscape, from one country to another, and even from region to region. For instance, if you are heading to Saadiyat Island, learn more about the cultural etiquette in Abu Dhabi. Be sure to take time to study the local culture to better navigate social and professional situations while there – and, ultimately, start building successful relationships!

Opt For Suitable Accommodation

One of the key rules of business travel? You’ll need to rest! It may seem counter productive at first, but think about it. To do your very best in professional situations, networking events, meetings, and conferences, you will need to feel rested and energized. And, this can be difficult if you have caught a red-eye flight, are suffering from jet lag, or have chosen an uncomfortable hotel! So, take time to research your options: this isn’t about choosing luxury or optimizing convenience, but more about having a quiet personal oasis to retreat to, rest, and recharge.

Learn Basic Phrases

While you may not be able to learn an entire language before your trip, it always pays off to learn basic phrases and words. Even just using the local terms for “thank you”, “hello”, and “a pleasure to meet you” before switching to English can go a long way in helping you build long-term relationships of trust. Plus, even outside of professional situations, the locals appreciate the effort!

Prepare Your Documents (And Visa, If Required)

Traveling abroad often requires the right documents and paperwork, especially if you are traveling for business. Here are some of the key documents you’ll want to check in advance:

  • Visa
  • Passport
  • Insurance policies
  • Boarding passes
  • Travel itineraries
  • Confirmation of services such as hotel stays and transfers

Keep in mind that visa processing times can change significantly depending on the passport you hold, your destination, and the reason for your visit. To avoid last-minute stress, apply in advance or ask a qualified travel agent to help you navigate the process.

Prepare For Your Task In Advance

Last but not least, when traveling to a new country, you may need to navigate unfamiliar environments, cultural nuances, interactions, languages, and even cuisine. You may not have that much time to prepare for an important meeting, conference, or presentation! So, be sure to prepare in advance and allocate only a few minutes or hours to rehearsing key points before the main event!
