Before You Start Ripping Things Out… A Trifecta of Things to Remember When Installing a New Kitchen

For so many of us, a new kitchen is a new start. If you’ve moved into a property where the kitchen is absolutely not to your taste, a renovation is vital. But before you start looking up kitchen essentials and picturing what you can make, there are some key points to remember to ensure that the entire process is well planned and you can navigate it smoothly:

The Planning and Design Process

Of course, it’s vital to enlist the help of a home remodeler, but what we need to remember is there first has to be a detailed design. We need to consult with the designer to visualize our layout and make sure that it meets our needs, not just for storage and style, but efficiency as well. It may be worth considering the kitchen triangle concept, which involves positioning the sink, stove, and refrigerator into a triangular formation, as this optimizes your workflow.

Don’t forget to record accurate dimensions of the walls, locations of windows and doors, and current plumbing and electrical connections because this will ensure that you avoid costly mistakes and choose everything that is of the right size right away.

And of course, if it doesn’t need saying, we’ll say it anyway! Please be realistic in your budget which covers all aspects of the renovation. Also, bear in mind a contingency fund is definitely worth considering just in case there are unexpected costs that you really didn’t factor in!

Preparing the Space

If you are getting ready for your renovation, make sure that you are removing all items, including appliances and old cabinets. The builders may very well do this as part of their service, however, you need to make sure that not just your vital appliances are protected, but the adjacent rooms should also be protected from dust and debris. Dust sheets are invaluable here!

Also, look at getting the foundations fixed before any work begins. Leveling the floors, patching holes, and addressing any water damage or mold issues before you proceed will give you a head start.

Working in the Right Order

If you are attempting to do it yourself, think of the following routine:

  • Start by fitting all the wall cabinets while also making sure they are level and fastened securely because this provides the framework for the rest of the kitchen.
  • Once the wall units are in place, install the countertops, but if there are complex joins, a professional will ensure a seamless finish.
  • Ensure you install built-in appliances as you go and lay flooring around the units, leaving space for expansion, as this helps prevent damage and ensures a smooth finish.
  • The final touches, such as electrical or plumbing second fixes, tiles, or splashbacks, can finish off your kitchen.

Of course, installing a new kitchen is a massive project, but it should never be at the cost of safety and professional help. Always remember to stay flexible and adapt to any unexpected challenges that will arise during the process. Be patient, and your dream kitchen will become a reality!
