Being Vigilant Against The Predators In Your Society

It’s one of the responsibilities of every father to ensure the safety of the children and the family in general. While this can include doing our best to protect them from accidents and bad health, some thought does need to be spared towards the prospect of predators in the community. While we don’t like to mistrust those around us, those who would harm our family can often hide behind trust, familiarity, and respectability. However, vigilance doesn’t have to mean constant paranoia, but rather trusting your instincts, keeping an eye out for patterns, and valuing safety above all else.

Watch Patterns, Not Personalities

One of the biggest issues we have around predators is that we can expect them to act a certain way and to wear their maliciousness visibly. However, many can appear kind, generous, spiritual, educated, or socially respected, which is exactly why people lower their guard around them. Instead, you should look for red flags in patterns of behavior, such as eeking private access to children, ignoring boundaries, trying to create special relationships, or stopping others from asking questions. Teaching your children the importance of transparency and maintaining their personal comfort, and warning them against being isolated by adults, can help them navigate potentially uncertain situations when you’re not there, too.

Check The Sex Offender Registry

If you’re concerned about a given area or community, then checking the sex offender registry could help you get some quick answers to your questions. Registries are not perfect, and they do not list every dangerous person, but they can provide important information about known offenders living, working, or spending time nearby. You can search addresses, neighborhoods, schools, churches, and other places your family routinely visits.

Research Organizations (Like Churches And Youth Clubs)

As mentioned, the registry isn’t the only record you should search. Public records, be they published in the news or by legal advocates dealing with abuse in the area, can help you vet organizations your family might join, be it a church, school, club, camp, youth program, or otherwise. Publicly published cases like the concerns tied to Father John F. Rohrich can help you see past allegations and measures taken by institutions, whether it’s to protect children or to try to close ranks to protect potential abusers. It can help you see not only the potential danger of individuals, but also which organizations shouldn’t be trusted, as well.

Encourage Transparency Amongst Your Family

Many parents may feel like they don’t want to have their children worried about potential dangers out there, but it can be more important to teach your children about good, safe habits around adults, such as rules around body safety and boundaries, the concept of “tricky people” trying to offer them gifts of special treatment, and how to move to a safe place if they feel unsafe. Using safety measures like child tracking apps can help you better ensure that your child isn’t left vulnerable and alone for too long, too. Other home and family security tools like video doorbells and smart home security systems can help protect your peace of mind, too.

Caution is a valuable trait for a parent to have, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Know the boundaries you want to set for your family and always be vigilant.
