Tips for Keeping Cool While Traveling

Traveling is an amazing adventure. From learning about new cultures to trying delicious cuisines, there is so much to take in. And it goes without saying, but might as well be said anyway – traveling takes a lot of planning to pull everything off and ensure things go smoothly. And yet, even with the best laid plans, things may go wrong, or something you are not accustomed to, such as higher temperatures, will affect your overall experience. When that happens, all is not lost; you have options to help make your trip fun and exciting and keep you cool along the way.

Keep Your Essential Devices Cool

Traveling with medical-grade devices, such as hearing aids, is easy, especially with today’s high-tech options. However, if you are traveling to a warm destination, it is important to take a few moments to learn about keeping hearing aids cool. After all, you need them to enjoy yourself and fully communicate with the world around you. Luckily, it is easy to care for and maintain them no matter where you are, even when the temperature rises.

Stick to the Shadows

When all else fails, and you cannot find a place to cool off indoors, look for shade. The umbrella at a nearby bistro is a perfect place to stop and rest for a while. If you are able to find covered walkways as you meander through the city streets, you will be better off and much more comfortable than if you have to continue moving under the heat of the sun.

Wear Lighter Colors

What you wear can have a significant impact on how you feel when you are out in the sun. Since darker colors soak up the sun faster than light colors and hold it in longer, it is best to save your bold black clothing until the evening. Alternatively, lighter colors reflect the sun’s rays and do not hold in as much heat. Choosing lighter colors during the daytime will help you stay cooler and look great, too.

Always Wear a Hat

A hat is one of the best ways to fend off the sun. Not only does a hat help protect you from UVA and UVB damage, but it will also help to reduce the sun’s effect and cool you off. Take care that your hat fully covers your head and is made of a light material and color so you do not overheat.

Seek Green Spaces

Green spaces, such as parks, wildlife refuges, and arboretums, are ideal for cooling off during the day. A concrete jungle without any vegetation is far more likely to be baking hot than a green space. The tree canopies can provide shade coverage while the vast array of plants helps to naturally cool the area.

Rethink Your Itinerary

If your location is warmer than you are used to or it is experiencing an unprecedented heat wave, you can change your plans around a bit to accommodate your travel goals and maintain an ideal comfort level. Take a look at the itinerary and research the hours of operation for everything you want to do or see. If an activity or tour takes place outside and you have it scheduled for peak daytime hours, try to swap it for a time earlier or later in the day that is conducive to a more comfortable experience. Alternatively, consider looking for other options that are indoors only and allow you to relax in the comfort of air conditioning. It is helpful to note that not all countries have air conditioning as a standard amenity.

Invest in a Neck Fan

You have more than likely noticed other travelers with what looks like headphones around their necks. Upon closer inspection, you notice that what they are wearing is not headphones, but instead a personal fan. Even if this is not the fashion statement you are going for, go ahead and give it a try. You will probably appreciate the cooling features and never want to take them off.

Regularly Apply Sunscreen

Sunscreen will not only help protect your skin from sunburn and damage, but it can also help reflect the sun’s rays and prevent your skin from soaking them in. Select a comfortable sunscreen formulation to avoid blocking your pores, which will prevent you from sweating, only to leave you feeling uncomfortable.

Carry a Personal Fan

Portable fans are perfect for hot weather travels. You can find them in a vast array of sizes and colors to suit your needs and preferences. Look for one that is small enough to fit in your bag easily, and puts out enough cool air to keep you comfortable. Also, do your research to select a model that either has a very long battery life or one that easily charges via your laptop or wall charger.

Hydrate All Day

Drinking water in a hot climate is a necessity. Always travel with a filled water bottle, no matter where you go, so that you can continuously hydrate throughout the day. Attach the bottle to a bandolier-style water bottle carrier or stash it in your backpack or purse. Invest in a high-quality water bottle that keeps water chilled all day long and prevents spills. Avoid overhydrating, as that is dangerous, too. Instead, take small sips as the day goes along and refill the water bottle as necessary.

Go on the Water

When it is too hot to do anything else, and you have a body of water nearby, that is an ideal place to go. Consider taking a cruise, a dip in the ocean, or a swim in your hotel pool to help cool you off and have some fun in the sun. Always apply sunscreen and take care not to stay in the direct sun for too long.

With the abundance of ideas and suggestions on this list, you will surely find at least one or two tips to prevent you from overheating. Keep your essential devices cool and clear of debris, find enough shade throughout your trip, and reconfigure your schedule to stay out of the heat during the day. With a little planning, preparation, and patience, you can have a wonderful vacation even when the temperatures soar.
