How To Make An International Long-Distance Relationship Possible

Woman holding gift box using laptop, online dating. Distance relationship, love, Valentine's Day

There are many forms of romance out there, and what looks like the default for one person might not work well for you. Some people get married within two months of meeting one another, others have several children together, have lived for years, and yet never married. Some people start out their relationships online, others meet in person and never have social media.

If you like someone and are willing to accept the whole of them, and they you, then who are we to judge how you or others find love? The fact is that love is out there and waiting to be found, even if it doesn’t feel like that. Of course, the practical elements can differ from person to person.

This is especially true of long-distance relationships between countries. Maybe you met on vacation but have to return home, planning your next trip as soon as you can. Maybe you met online and are counting down the days before you see one another again. With our interest in travel and connection, we think some of the following insights could help you:

Keep The Gifts Coming

Long-distance relationships can keep afloat with tiny surprises that show up unexpectedly at someone’s door. You could send flowers for no particular reason, maybe some beautiful silk flowers bulk arrangements that last forever and remind them of your thoughtfulness every single day. Small packages with their favorite snacks or a book you mentioned in conversation work just as well.

The real secret is consistency over grand gestures. A postcard from your morning coffee shop or a playlist you made during lunch break can mean more than expensive gifts that arrive once a month, just make sure that not all the sentiment is in your direct messages. These tokens should help to bridge the physical gap and keep you present in each other’s daily lives.

Make Video Dates

Technology makes it possible to share meals, watch movies together, or just fall asleep on camera with someone thousands of miles away. You might schedule such video calls that become the highlight of both your weeks, or you could leave video messages for each other to watch later when time zones don’t connect perfectly.

The spontaneous video calls often feel the most special, though. Calling just to show them the sunset from your window or the new coffee shop you discovered gives you some nice shared moments that feel almost like being together. At least until you can be.

Meet Up In Person As Often As Possible

Nothing replaces being in the same room together, breathing the same air, and creating memories you can both touch and feel. Ultimately, this is the end goal of any long-distance relationship. Planning visits, even small, even in the country between you, should give you both something concrete to look forward to, and those countdowns are dates you can’t wait for. You might also alternate who travels, or pick destinations that become special places just for the two of you. Just be sure to make the trip a little more grand than it might have been.

With this advice, we hope you can more easily make long distance relationships possible.
