Does your home not quite suit your family anymore? It’s a common situation for those with growing families, whether you’ve had an elderly relative move in or you’ve just brought home a new baby sibling for your kids.
But when you’re in the market for a more suitable space to take care of your family, you can’t just put down a deposit on any old place!
You’ve got to have an eye out for the three must-have features down below. Without them, you could end up in the same stuck-for-space property you’re trying to get away from.
Enough Space!
This really is the crux of the whole decision! You need more space, and you need to be sure the property you go for has enough to go around.
This can get a bit tricky though, as there’s no real formula for it. We can work by a couple of general rules though, such as when you have a child you ideally want upwards of 1500 square feet of space to work with. For a family of four or more, the bigger the better!
Indeed, if you were to contact some luxury home builders and get them to draw up a floorplan for your ideal family home, it’d be best to give them a square foot measurement of at least 1800.
Be careful not to send this measurement too high, however. Even if you have 2+ children to think about, you’re not really going to want to breach 2500 to 3000 square feet.
More Than One Bathroom
The more people in the house, the longer it takes to get into the bathroom in the morning! On top of that, the more cleaning and upkeep the bathroom will need as well, and that gets pretty tiring.
That’s why we highly recommend looking for a property with more than one bathroom. You don’t necessarily even need to find one with two or more full bathrooms.
For example, make sure there’s a big family bathroom, and then see if there’s a separate WC on the first floor. Just having two toilets will save a lot of time and hassle!
But if you’d love it if your new family home had both a big bathroom and then an ensuite off the main bedroom, go for it!
The Chance to Personalize
No family home is complete without a bit of space to express yourself. Kids love it when they can decorate their own rooms, and you’re going to need a house that’ll allow you to live with a bit of mess around.
If the property seems on the smaller side, or it seems to be an overly-pristine house, it won’t be suitable for this kind of living situation. Avoid this side of the market during your search.
It’s essential to have some must-have conditions in mind when looking for a new family home. They’ll ensure the property you pay out for is the kind you can actually enjoy living in long term!
