5 Things To Consider Before Investing In A Pool

Thinking of splashing out on a pool? There are a few important things you need to consider first. Below are 5 of the most important questions to ask yourself before investing in a swimming pool

Above-ground or in-ground?

In-ground pools are the most traditional option. These are built into the ground and can be customized to be any shape or size. Above-ground pools are less customizable, but are much cheaper. They can also be safer – you have to climb a ladder to get into them, so you can’t accidentally fall into them. They also have a degree of portability that an in-ground pool does not – if you move house, you may have the option to dismantle it and take it with you to your new home.

Where should you install it?

Most pools are located outdoors. It’s important to find a suitable area of your yard that is flat and has the right soil conditions (if you’re installing an in-ground pool). An indoor pool may be possible to build in some basements, and may be better suited to homes in cooler or rainier regions. Alternatively, you can build an outdoor pool and then build a structure over the top to provide shelter (although this will cost more).

What type of lining should you choose?

Different materials can be used to line a pool and they each have their pros and cons. Concrete is highly customizable and very durable, but can be high maintenance and rough to touch. Vinyl is the most affordable option and is very smooth, but has a less appealing appearance and is not very durable. Fibreglass may be the most attractive and low maintenance option – however it costs the most to install. Decide which material is best suited for you.

Are you prepared for the maintenance?

All pools need to be well maintained to keep them clean and safe. This maintenance includes removing debris, cleaning the pool floor and sides, testing the water quality, adding chemicals and cleaning out filters. You’ll need to buy equipment for maintaining your pool at a pool supply store. You’ll also need to learn how to maintain your pool and develop a schedule. It is possible to hire someone to maintain your pool for you, but most people cannot afford this. Make sure you are prepared for the upkeep of owning a pool – if you don’t keep up with maintenance, you won’t be able to use your pool.

Do you have kids?

If you have kids, it could be important to make sure that your pool is child-friendly. Fun features like a slide or fountain could be worth considering. You may also want to consider heating to make your pool more inviting. Safety could also be an important thing to consider if you have young kids (or pets). A hard pool cover could help to prevent anyone falling in your pool when it is not in use. Alternatively, you could install gates or barriers around your pool. As already mentioned, an above-ground pool could also be safer.
