Tips For A More Sustainable Home Renovation

Happy couple analyzing blueprints during home renovation process.

Home renovations are fantastic – you will get your space looking exactly how you want it, it can be a great investment for the future and so much more. Yet if you’re looking for it to be sustainable, this can be a bit more of a challenge. However it’s not impossible and there are a myriad of things you can do that can make sure your home renovation isn’t so damaging for the environment. In this article we take a look at some things you can do, from taking your leftover metals to a scrap yard that recycles, to being conscious of the materials you use. Keep reading to find out more and get inspired.

Recycle where you can

When you are renovating your house, you should aim to recycle what you can as opposed to throwing it all away. You can take materials such as bits of metal or other larger elements to a scrap yard where they can recycle it for you and repurpose it to something else in the future. You can also get companies that can come and pick up larger items for you to be turned into something new and be much better for the environment than just getting rid of it for landfill.

Choose your materials wisely

When you are choosing materials for your home, such as for your flooring, roof and your surfaces, do your research. It’s a good idea to look for sustainable fabrics that might be made from recycled materials. They could also be fabrics that are not only made from recycled materials, but also that are produced using more sustainable methods. This is when they’re made in a way that conserves rather than wastes water and energy and reduces the usage of harmful chemicals that can be leaked into the environment and harm wildlife.

Think of energy efficient upgrades

When doing up your home, you have a blank canvas to make it what you want to. There are many energy efficient upgrades you can add such as solar panels, ensuring proper insulation to avoid having to put the heating on, adding water collection points, upgrading to energy efficient doors and windows and more. When you choose your appliances, opt for newer, greener models that are designed to be better for the environment, use less electricity and last longer too. These can still be good prices, but will be more sustainable.
These are just a few things you can do that can make you have a more sustainable renovation. Remember it’s up to us all to contribute our bit to the environment and ensure we reduce our carbon footprint. When you do a home renovation, keeping as sustainable as possible is a real help for this. Have you recently done a home renovation or is it something you’re thinking of? If so, what are some top tips you have? Let us know in the comments below, we’d love to hear from you.
