How to Make Home Cozier in 4 Simple Steps

There’s nothing quite like coming home to a cozy house, one which instantly envelops you in a warm hug and embraces the cold weather to deliver to a cocoon that protects you from the cold weather and helps you relax and enjoy your private space.

But is it as easy as it might seem to create the ultimate cozy home? And what exactly do you need to make sure your home is set up just how you need it, so you can come home, unwind, and enjoy your personal space?

Let’s take a look at some ways you can make your home cozier while the temperatures are low.

Insulation

One of the most significant options on this list is adding insulation to your home. If your home is leaking energy, it doesn’t matter what you do; it won’t quite be as cozy or as warm as you need it to. Those little drafts that sneak in through windows, the chill you get coming in under the door, or the excessive heating bills will detract from the ambiance you’re trying to create as you shiver a little bit more at home. Talking to insulation experts, such as Insulation Commandos, can help you to ascertain where you need added insulation and what type of insulation you need to help you give your home the basics that work for you, regardless of the season.

Layered Lighting

Making your home cozy isn’t just about adding warmth; it’s about setting the scene, and nothing does this more than layered lighting.

What is layered lighting? It’s when you add lighting to a room at more than one level. You don’t need to, nor should you rely on ceiling lights alone, and you need to make sure that you’re adding lighting at different points in the room. This can be via candles, table lamps, floor lights, wall lighting, string lights, or under-cupboard/furniture lighting. It doesn’t matter where, just that it makes sense for the space and helps to pull the room together to build up to that cozy feeling you’re looking for.

Add Layers

Nothing screams cozy like having layers wrapped around you and your home. Blankets draped over sofas and chairs, layered rugs on hardwood flooring, adding soft covers to seating that doesn’t already have it is leather sofas, extra cushions, etc. The more “layers” you have, the more there is to sink into and create a welcoming space that encourages you to kick back and relax, not sit in a stark, cold room.

Scents

Nothing builds a vibe just like fragrance, and part and parcel for creating a cozy home is how it smells to you. Choose your favorite scents, or if you need help finding something that fits the bill perfectly, try fragrances such as vanilla, sandalwood, or bergamot to start and see how they make you feel. Scent is subjective; it can evoke strong memories, so finding the right one for your home is going to be a personal choice with a bit of trial and error. Start with candles or room sprays, then layer the scent throughout the home once you get the right combination, so that no matter where you are, you get the same feeling.
