It’s ridiculously easy to look at a room online and think, “Okay, yep, that’s the exact look.” The sofa is perfect, the lighting is perfect, the coffee table has one book, one candle, and one weird sculptural object that nobody can explain (there’s plenty of those at Target, HomeGods, TJ Maxx, ect), but somehow it works.
And then someone tries to recreate that at home, and it just doesn’t hit the same. Like, you saw this person’s room, which, honestly, was probably designed by a professional interior designer, and it honestly looked like it was possible to recreate. But what gives? Like, the room looks kind of right, but also kind of stiff, or empty. Or uncomfortable. Or like it’s waiting for someone to come in and take a photo before real life is allowed to happen.
Well, just keep in mind here that those rooms online are usually designed for one still image. Not always, but you’re usually judging and recreating a space based on angles and lighting that might not be the most realistic for day to day life, and thats where people tend to mess up here.
A Room Can Look Great in a Photo and Still Feel Weird in Person
Well, photos have a way of tricking people, even if AI or Photoshop isn’t involved. It’s no different for a person; it’s the lighting and the angles that can make someone look a lot younger, thinner, or a totally different person. So basically, here, a room can look amazing from one angle because the camera hides the awkward corner, the strange walkway, the too-small rug, or the chair nobody can sit comfortably in.
But real life doesn’t stay in one angle. People walk through the room. They sit down. They reach for the lamp. They need somewhere to put a drink. They want to talk to someone without twisting their whole body like they’re in a waiting room. Even in videos, like home tours on YouTube, the camera is still recording from flattering angles, which again, isn’t that much different than a person being recorded.
Pretty Furniture Still Needs to be Useful
Sometimes, beautiful furniture isn’t the most functional, well, sometimes. For example, an antique chair can be beautiful, but would you really want to sit on it and risk it breaking? A white couch can be gorgeous, but your kids and your pets basically can’t touch it. An antique Turkish or Moroccan rug can really be a centerpiece to a room, the whole focal point, but they need a lot of care, and sometimes, depending on the age, you probably can’t even step on them. See the issue?
Some homes, well, celebrity and even some influencer homes, they just have rooms that go unused, and their intention is to look pretty, and that’s it. But sure, there are plenty of home furnishings stores where you can find beautiful furniture and decor that’s still useful, and ideally, you should look and shop for those in person too.
Lighting Needs to Work After the Pretty Daylight is Gone
Not every home can have floor-to-ceiling windows like those fancy homes; you can’t rely on south-facing windows if they’re tiny. The placement of your home and the size of yout windows isn’t the same as these homes. Well, that, and you still need good lighting in general, even once the sun is down.
