The Best Seasonal Shoe Styles for the Chic Traveler

When it comes to which shoes you should pack for traveling, there are definitely a few styles that stand out from the rest. Here are a few of the best that you should pack, whether you are going on a family holiday to France, or a chic and sophisticated long weekend in Dubai.

Sneakers

Sneakers are easily one of the best shoes to pack for any holiday. They can be dressed up or dressed down, you can wear them for a day out exploring, or for a romantic dinner, and most importantly, you can wear them from the moment you wake up until you go to bed without being uncomfortable or having foot pain.

Check out shoe stores, Black Friday shoe deals by Melissa, and everywhere in between to find the perfect pair for you and your next holiday.

Athletic Sneakers

Athletic sneakers are different from regular fashion sneakers in the sense that they may not always be the most stylish, but they are ultra comfortable, have superior foot support, and are designed to protect your feet against damage and pain while doing activities.

These are perfect for those who are planning to do more than just walking when on holiday, and you want a shoe that is suited for the streets, as well as the less-walked paths and trails you may want to explore.

Sandals

Sandals are another classic when it comes to holiday shoes, especially if you are heading somewhere hot or to the beach. Not only are they perfect for keeping cool, but most pairs weigh next to nothing, meaning you can take several with you, even if you just have a carry-on bag.

When it comes to the style, pick one that works best for you and that you are the most comfortable in. Once again, you are going to spend a lot of time wearing them, so don’t choose a style that doesn’t feel right just because it is trendy or popular at the time.

Boots

Boots should be a staple in your luggage when traveling to a cold, Wintery destination. Snow and rain are common during the Winter in many parts of the world, and there will be times when sneakers just don’t cut it.

Be sure to choose the right style, though, as you will most likely only be able to pack one pair. Choose a pair with great ankle and foot support, made from a material that can withstand the elements, such as leather.

Mules

If sandals and regular flats just aren’t for you, then a pair of mules may be right up your alley. Not only are they super-stylish and trendy, but they also offer the comfort and breathability of sandals, but with the sophistication of a pair of closed shoes.

Additionally, brands like Birkenstock have created mules that give you the ultra-comfort the name has become famous for, but in a simple form-factor that can be worn with jeans, shorts, a skirt, and everything in between.

What to Remember

Now that you know a few of the best shoe styles to wear on your travels, here are a few things to remember when choosing shoes for your next holiday.

Versatility

Unless you are planning on taking three or four checked bags, you can’t take all your shoes with you because they are simply too heavy. Because of this, it is always best to take two or three versatile pairs instead.

For instance, a pair of fashionable sneakers is great for walks around a city, but also for a casual dinner. On the other hand, thigh-high boots may be perfect for a romantic evening, but you will more than likely only wear them once, and they aren’t made for hours of walking and exploring the streets of a big city.

Terrain

Also, think about where you will be going and the terrain. For instance, the cobbled streets of Rome are not the same as the flat sidewalks of Cape Town, and some shoes will simply be better suited than others on certain terrains.

Weather

Next, think about the weather you may encounter. Winter in Edinburgh is filled with snow, ice, and rain, and therefore, a new pair of suede loafers won’t be better than a hardy pair of leather boots. The opposite is also true; you don’t want to wear a heavy, hot pair of boots when you are in a Summer town or city.

Activities

It is also important to think about what activities you will be doing. If you are going for a beach weekend, you won’t need more than a pair of sandals, whereas if you are exploring the great outdoors, you want a solid pair of sneakers or hiking boots.

All-Day Comfort

Finally, be sure that whichever pair of shoes you can wear, you can wear them for the entire day. In many cities, especially in Europe, you are going to be spending a lot of time walking and being on your feet, and the last thing you want is foot pain or blisters within the first hour or two of your holiday.
