5 Simple Strategies to Upgrade Your Garage

Surfboards and bicycles in empty garage

The garage often accounts for a significant percentage of a property’s footprint, and yet, in many cases, it’s treated by homeowners as an afterthought. While you’d be hard-pressed to say that the garage is as important as the kitchen, bathroom, or living room, it would also be unfair to say that it’s completely unimportant. From working on projects to keeping your valuables safe, your garage deserves to be given some TLC from time to time.

If your garage is currently looking a little worse for wear, then this page is for you. We’ll run through a few strategies that will take your garage from drab to fab in no time.

Clear It Out

If you’re like most homeowners, your garage will likely serve as your home’s dumping ground. Homeowners tend to put items there on a temporary basis, only for ‘temporary’ to become ‘permanent.’ After a while, the garage is one chaotic, cluttered mess.

So step one is to have a thorough clearout. This process involves going through all of the items in your garage and asking yourself whether they really need to be there. In many cases, you’ll find that you can sell the item or throw it away.

Invest in Storage

There are two ways to invest in storage that’ll benefit your garage. The first is to install quality, versatile garage storage that makes it easy to organize and retrieve your belongings. The other is to rent a storage unit, which is a cost-effective strategy for keeping your garage clutter-free. You need your Christmas decorations and skiing equipment; you do not need to keep them in your garage every day. Between a storage unit and garage shelving solutions, you’ll find it much easier to maintain a minimalist garage.

Upgrade the Door and Floors

Upgrading the garage door and floor is a tried-and-tested, highly effective strategy for not only enhancing the functionality of the garage but also seriously elevating its appearance. After all, the garage door and floor aren’t just incidental components; in many ways, they are the garage. Installing a garage door that aligns with your home’s decor and adding a garage floor coating that’s both beautiful and durable can have a transformative effect on the overall look and feel of the often-overlooked garage — and it can even boost the property’s value, too.

Add Insulation

Many homeowners who work to improve their garages often forget to add insulation. Garages can get pretty cold — or freezing in some areas — in the winter months, and you’ll be much less likely to spend time there if there’s a huge difference in temperature between the garage and other areas of your home. Adding some insulation, and perhaps a heating source if you live in an extremely cold area, will ensure that you’re happy to work on projects even during the winter months.

Add Some Fun

Finally, don’t forget to add some fun! Installing a sound system or adding a wall-mounted television, or perhaps even a bar, can make your garage a place where people want to spend time.
