An inviting living space is the dream of modern interior design. And if you’re lucky enough to have both a kitchen and a dining room to make use of, creating a comfortable and cozy eating space will be one of the best design decisions you’ll ever make!

That’s why we’ve put this list together. If you want to make it easier to enjoy your meals, and/or have the perfect space to sit down with a laptop so you can work from home, these are the five dining room design elements you should look into.

Seats That are Comfortable AND Stylish

You’ve probably heard before that ‘beauty is pain’, and when it comes to the interior decor world, a lot of people follow the same principle. However, if you want to create a dining room you’re happy to use and will be perfect for family mealtimes, try to combine both of these things into one.

The best place to do that? With your dining chairs! You’re going to be spending upwards of a half hour sitting on these, no matter what meal you’re digging into, so they need to be comfortable enough to spend that kind of time in.

You also want to make sure the kids won’t complain about how hard or cold the surface of the chair is, and you don’t want to get back or leg ache from them being too small or not having enough lumbar support.

A High Quality Table

The dining room would be nothing without the dining table, so make sure you’ve invested in a high quality piece. This is the kind of table that can draw the eye, be easy to clean and super sturdy, and you’re a fan of the shape and color.

That’s where ordering a custom wood table comes in very handy. If you can’t find a piece in a furniture shop that quite fits your dining room dream, get one bespoke. The cost is more than worth it, and tables that have been made specifically for your home tend to last a lot longer too!

Never Let Your Table Be Plain

Now you’ve got a worthy table to eat off of, make sure you decorate it to the highest standard. Place settings that you love and come with a texture you’re obsessed with, maybe some flowers and candles to dress up the middle, and a centerpiece item that ties it all together.

A plain table, while clean, is boring. That won’t help your dining room shine. You need to go into overdrive with your decor skills and put together an arrangement that brings you joy every time you see it. As long as you’re happy with the look, put whatever you want on it!

Level Your Lighting

Hanging overhead lamps in the dining room is quite the common practice. However, it’s better to bring the lighting lower and then level it against other lamps in the room.

For example, hanging three drop shades over the top of the table, with the center one dropping lower than the other two that are either side.

This way you can create a much cozier and more dynamic space, especially if you put lower watt bulbs in. You don’t want to have a high lumens bulb right in your face!

Create an Atmosphere of Sound

Dining rooms are always better when you can pump some tunes into them. It’s always nice to eat your meals with a bit of atmosphere, and some gentle music or white noise type sounds (such as a crackling fire), can really set the scene.

Either rig up a stereo system here or simply have a docking station where your phone can play. This way you don’t need to rely on sound playing from another room or trying to angle the TV toward the dining table – or worse, feel the need to put up media screens actually in the room itself!

Let’s Create the Dining Room of Your Dreams!

If you want your dining room to be the shining star of your home, make sure you’re designing the layout with tips like these. Make sure your table is the best focal point you could ever make, with some lovely settings on top.

You should then focus on the chairs you’ll need to use, the lighting you’ll be dining under, and the overall vibe of the room itself. The more you invest in elements like these, the more you’re going to enjoy using the space!
