How to create the perfect minimalist home

The mantra ‘less is more’ is particularly true when it comes to your home. Minimalism is one of the crowning architectural achievements of the 20th century and the trend is reappearing across many homes. Streamlined, crisp white walls create an effortless beauty that stands inviting and charming in any room in your home. A blank canvas created by clean white walls creates less distraction for the mind, helping each little bit of furniture and artwork really do the talking themselves.

Think of your furniture

Often your eyes are drawn straight to your furniture, so be careful not to purchase something too distracting. You want something that complements your existing features without standing out too much. It is best to begin simplifying a room by looking at the furniture. Think of what you have that can be eliminated without sacrificing comfort as this can provide some extra space too. Consider a select few pieces of simple furniture that can really set the tone for the rest of your home. Whites, greys and crèmes are subtle tones which create the feeling of tranquillity within your home.

Keep your essentials

Do you really need everything in your room? If you can live without it then get rid of it and strip the room down to its bare essentials. You can always start building your interior as time goes on but if you keep the starting design as simple and low key as possible you can slowly add the décor you desire at a later date.

Clear your floors, surfaces and walls

Completely clearing your floors can make your room seem a lot bigger. Get rid of anything stacked or stored on the floor as this ruins the seamless, streamlined look that minimalist homes are so famed for. RW Invest property specialists have a broad portfolio of investment opportunities complete with brand new furniture packs. These furniture packs are built with minimalism in mind as clean, crisp storage options provide a welcome addition to any new home.

Arrange your furniture in a way that creates sufficient walking space around each room. Once you have stripped your home down to the bare minimum, clear everything else on the floor. You can donate it, bin it, or find a place to stash it away tidily. As with surfaces and walls, if you leave these clear it leaves your property less cluttered and busy.

Declutter

Decluttering is one of the easiest ways in which you can reach a minimalist feel. If you see anything lying around serving no purpose, then it is time to say goodbye. Piles of old mail, car keys, shoes piled by the front door and empty wine glasses are some of the many items that pile up around your house if they are not stored away again where they belong. The kitchen island, dining room table or even the stairs become a dumping ground for anything you wish to put down in a hurry, often resulting in not moving it again until you come to tidy.

If you wish to truly embrace a minimalist design then you may need to eliminate some of your possessions and store some away out of sight. At first this may be tricky but if you come back to each room after a couple of months with a fresh set of eyes you may spot things that you haven’t used in a while and can do without.
