Africa is a diverse continent with a wide variety of cultural traditions, stunning and varied landscapes, and a myriad of wildlife. In fact, it is a continent so packed with amazing things to do, see and experience. It can be hard to narrow down what to do when you visit. That is why I have come up with this post on some of the most essential experiences that everyone should consider if they are travelling to Africa. Read on to find out what they are.
Enjoy The Beauty Of African Beaches
When visiting Africa, people often forget that they have some of the most amazing beaches in the world. For example, Zanzibar beaches like Nungwi boast soft white sands and clear turquoise waters that are ideal for relaxing days. Head to Kendwa beach later in the day for the best sunset views, or try some more lively activities like kiteboarding at Paje Beach or snorkelling at Matemwe, where you’ll find some vibrant teeming coral reefs.
Immerse Yourself In Local Culture
Immersing yourself in the local culture when travelling in the continent of Africa is also something that you should have at the top of your priority list. Of course, a little homework on local cultures and what is and is not polite is needed. But once you have this information, you can experience local musical festivals, try the most delicious and authentic African cuisine, and even meet members of local tribes and learn about their daily life and traditions.
Go On Safari
Safari is another experience that everyone should have when visiting Africa, because the wildlife you can see up close is unsurpassed. Indeed, the safari big five include Lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards and buffalo, and seeing any of these animals up close in the wild can be an experience that stays with you for a lifetime.
A great thing about safaris is that they often combine accommodation in luxury lodges. This means you get an incredibly comfortable stay while still having the opportunity to immerse yourself in nature. Many African safaris are also run by experienced game drivers who understand the animals’ behaviours and so can maximise your chance of seeing them, while also maintaining safety. Some safaris can even be combined with beach holidays for the best of both worlds. In this way, you can have the most exciting experiences and enjoy some rest and recuperation at the same time.
Trek In The Mountains
During your trip to Africa, a trek in the mountain range surrounding Kilimanjaro is another experience you won’t want to miss. Just be sure you have the right kit, including sturdy hiking or climbing shoes. The toughest route is known as Umbwe, and is best suited for experienced climbers. For those less experienced, the Marangu route, lined with comfortable huts, is a good choice, and it does tend to be the option chosen most often by tourists. While the Lemosho route is more challenging but offers stunning panoramic views and a real sense of peace and remoteness that many people find appealing.
